Healthy Living Helps

It’s always nice to be reminded about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle – and exactly what this means. And this month, a new study (Professor Kay-Tee Khaw, Cambridge University) does just that.

Scientists studied the lifestyle habits of more than 20,000 men and women aged between 45 and 79 years between 1993 and 1997.

The adults were given one point for each of four healthy behaviours:

Not smoking
Being active
Sticking to acceptable alcohol intakes
Eating plenty of fruit and veg.
The people were then followed up around 11 years later.

Those who scored zero points due to smoking, being inactive, drinking too much and having poor intakes of fruit and veg, were four times more likely to have died during the study than those who scored four points for fulfilling all the healthy lifestyle factors.

Those who scored two points – in other words they had two unhealthy lifestyle habits but two healthy ones – were twice as likely to have died.

The scientists then worked out that a person who scored zero had the same risk of dying as someone with a score of four who was 14 years older.

As a result, they conclude that ditching just four unhealthy habits can help you live 14 years longer.

Bone Density

We are looking at bone loss this week

Check with your GP first – then consider what is best for you to keep your bones strong.

After menopause, the drop in oestrogen levels means bones lose density more rapidly, but exercise and diet can counter or reverse this.

We do know that walking and resistance training can help to increase bone density (Nottingham University research)

The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) says that 20 minutes on a vibration plate may benefit bones (but not for people with established osteoporosis).

Diet too, can help. A US nutritional expert, Professor Katherine Tucker of Tufts University in Boston suggests;

Protein with every meal – there is a suggestion that higher protein intake results in less bone loss over time.

Extra fruit and veg will help because they are rich in magnesium and potassium to protect against calcium loss. Leafy green veg contains Vitamin K which can help reduce the risk of hip fracture by two thirds.

Avoid processed foods and don’t add extra salt because this can leach calcium from the bones.

Love red foods because they are rich in lycopene. Professor Tucker says that eating about 4 servings of lycopene – rich foods such as tomatoes leads to a lower risk of fractures.

So the message (courtesy of Woman & Home) – is watch your diet and keep up the exercise for good bone health. Don’t forget too, that keeping your weight down puts less strain on the bones so is worth working on too!

Vintage Marathon

There’s hope for us all!

The Olympic torchbearers have been chosen – included is Moira who is 84. Moira did her first marathon last year by walking 1,876 times round her village hall (Guardian 09.12.11) at a rate of quarter of a mile per week – she walks using two sticks – OK – so she’s not Paula Radcliffe – but its her Personal Best !

Great Eastern Run 2011

Well, we did it! Tristan, Steve and Marion ran the Great Eastern half marathon on Sunday. It was really well organized; fully marshalled and with plenty of First Aiders to hand. There were well stocked and frequent water stations and even loos along the way!

The route was lined by the people of Peterborough, who, as always, turned out to cheer the runners on. The weather was ideal, cool to begin with, but not too cool and the rain held off.

We got round in a great time (2 hrs 16 mins) - admittedly not super fast, but we kept going and ran all the way. We know our running style well enough now, took the first couple of miles gently, found our 'steady state' and kept going and going. We resisted the temptation to overtake everyone we could and just paced ourselves. We also resisted the temptation to walk, especially between 10 and 11 miles when there doesn't seem to be much left in the legs.

Eventually the finishing line appeared and we made a sort of swift sprint to the end! We were rewarded with medals, goodie bags, drinks bottles, bananas and energy drinks. Swiftly reunited with our labelled bags we set off home feeling very pleased with ourselves.

Why don't you try it? A year ago neither Steve nor Tristan would have contemplated running 13.1 miles. Just look what can happen with some training and determination. Give us a ring, we have Running Buddies waiting to help you to be your best - who knows, next October you coud be running it with us!
